But is it the right place for you? As a local who has lived here for several years—and with over 15 years of experience living across various parts of Southern California—I’m here to give you an honest look at what life is really like in Temecula and Murrieta. From the pros and cons to insider tips, this guide will help you make an informed decision.
Why Temecula and Murrieta Are Great Places to Live
Both Temecula and Murrieta offer something for everyone. Whether you’re a retiree, a young family, or a newly married couple, these cities have amenities and activities that cater to all ages and lifestyles. For retirees, the weather is a major draw, along with the abundance of golf courses. Families appreciate the excellent schools, numerous parks, and sports programs for kids. Newlyweds and young professionals can enjoy the thriving winery scene, diverse restaurants, and easy access to weekend getaways.

When it comes to affordability, Temecula and Murrieta stand out in Southern California. The cost of living is generally lower than in nearby coastal cities, making these areas attractive for those seeking more value for their money.
The Downsides: Growth and Traffic
However, with the rapid growth in both cities—over 120% in the past 20 years—some longtime residents are not thrilled. This boom has led to increased traffic and a loss of the small-town feel that once characterized Temecula and Murrieta. For those who have lived here for decades, the development of new housing tracts and commercial areas can be bittersweet.
It’s important to note that while the growth has brought more amenities and services to the area, it has also led to congestion, particularly during peak commuting hours. If you’re moving here from a smaller town or less populated area, this might be something to consider.

HOA Communities: A Double-Edged Sword
One unique feature of both Temecula and Murrieta is the prevalence of HOA (Homeowners Association) communities. While some might be wary of HOAs, many residents find that these organizations help maintain the quality and appearance of neighborhoods. Most HOA communities offer a variety of amenities, such as pools, parks, sports courts, and walking paths—all for a modest monthly fee. For example, in the Harveston community, residents enjoy a beautiful lake with a walking path, a pool, and well-maintained common areas.
However, the HOA’s role in maintaining neighborhood standards can be a double-edged sword. While it ensures that properties are kept in good condition, it also means that homeowners must adhere to certain rules and regulations, which may not appeal to everyone.
Weather: The Year-Round Sunshine
As with much of Southern California, the weather in Temecula and Murrieta is a major selling point. You can expect nearly year-round sunshine, with mild winters and hot summers. While summer temperatures can reach the high 90s or even 100s, mornings and evenings are typically cooler, making it ideal for outdoor activities like walking, barbecuing, and enjoying your patio. The few hot months are a small price to pay for the beautiful weather the rest of the year.

The New Influx: Who’s Moving to Temecula and Murrieta?
Over the past few years, a significant number of new residents have moved to Temecula and Murrieta from Northern California, Oregon, and Washington. Additionally, many are relocating from larger Southern California cities like San Diego, Orange County, and Los Angeles. These transplants are often drawn by the lower cost of living, better school districts, and a more suburban lifestyle.
Interestingly, despite the concerns about adjusting to a new area, I haven’t had a single client regret their move to Temecula or Murrieta. In fact, many are pleasantly surprised by the quality of life these cities offer, compared to the larger, more congested urban areas they left behind.
The Commute: A Major Consideration
One of the biggest drawbacks of living in Temecula and Murrieta is the commute. These cities are considered commuter towns, and if your job is in San Diego, Riverside, or Orange County, you can expect to spend a significant amount of time in your car. While the central location of Temecula and Murrieta makes it easy to enjoy all that Southern California has to offer—beaches, mountains, deserts, and cities—the downside is that daily commutes can be long and grueling.
If your job is located far from these areas, it’s worth considering whether the commute is worth the trade-off in lifestyle. For those who work remotely or have jobs close by, however, Temecula and Murrieta offer an ideal blend of affordability, amenities, and quality of life.
Would I Move from Temecula After 4 Years?
After living in Temecula for four years, I can honestly say that I wouldn’t want to move. While I sometimes miss the beach lifestyle—especially the restaurants and the more temperate weather—I’ve found that the benefits of living in Temecula far outweigh the drawbacks. The community here is welcoming, the cost of living is reasonable, and the overall quality of life is excellent.
