Temecula High Schools

Since the beginning of 1989, the city of Temecula has worked incredibly hard to ensure that the Temecula Valley Unified School district is first-rate. Founded on the mission, of “high-quality teaching and learning for all”, Temecula has been built up around our schools and the influence they bring to this community. Proximity to each high school serving grades 9-12 allocates which students attend which school. TVUSD includes three public high schools and knowing that these years are some of the most formative, I want to give you a closer look into what makes each high school so unique and successful.

Chaparral High School

Chaparral High School (CHS), number 2,241 in national rankings and 328th within the state of California, is located on the north end of Temecula off of Winchester and Nicolas road. It was recognized as a California Distinguished School in 2001 and according to U.S. News and World Report, CHS falls within the top ten percent of high schools in the nation. Accredited by the Western Association of schools and colleges, CHS routinely scores on state testing as one of the top academic high schools in Riverside County. Because of this Chaparral has won several awards such as the 2017 Gold ribbon. If you attend CHS, you must remember that the puma’s show PRIDE: P(passion) R(respect) I(integrity) D(determination) E(excellence) all. the. time. Chaparral offers students the ability to take Advanced Placement courses and exams in order to bypass them before college and 47% of students utilize this option. As far as extracurriculars are concerned, the guys are set with football, volleyball, golf, tennis, Waterpolo, cross country, basketball, soccer, wrestling, baseball, lacrosse, swim, and track and field teams. The same is offered to girls, but in addition are softball, field hockey, and cheer/ stunt. CHS even built an impressive Olympic-sized pool shared with TVHS to ensure their athletes have access to excellent facilities. If you or your child is a more creative type, no need to worry! CHS has an incredibly talented band, choir, drama, dance, and the platinum press, aka school newspaper. But the list doesn’t end there. On-campus you can also find an AVID program, associated student body, career technical education, GATE, NJROTC (naval science), yearbook, and over 60 clubs to be a part of!! Lastly, the graduation rate is exceptionally high at 96%!

Temecula Valley High School

Established in 1985, Temecula Valley High School has a claim to fame neither of the other options does, as Temecula’s first high school. TVHS has grown to be a California Distinguished School with a 27 to 1 student-teacher ratio. On Friday nights you won’t see the Golden Bears in any other color besides gold and brown. The football games are truly next level, you won’t want to miss a single one. The school spirit runs deep, and my friends are still proud to be golden bears today. TVHS is always looking for ways to improve, from the construction of a new multimillion-dollar gym in 2007 and later a multi-million dollar performing arts center in 2013. TVHS scored an A- on niche.com scoring A/A- in academics, diversity, and college prep. Unfortunately, the average was lowered by a C+ in clubs and activities and B’s for health/safety and teachers. TVHS falls #379 out of 1,898 public high schools in California, with 75% of the student body proficient in reading, and 47% proficiency in math. On average 93% of seniors will graduate and many have taken AP exams. TVHS also strongly encourages college readiness classes, such as the AP Readiness Program at UCR one Saturday workshop every month. The English Learner Advisory Committee is also a highlight, ensuring each student receives the unique care and information necessary to succeed. TVHS has an insanely competitive athletics program, complete with the full range of sports. The football, soccer, wrestling, and tennis teams are known around the valley for their program’s legacy.

Great Oak High School

I’ll be honest, I’m definitely partial to Great Oak High School because it gave me the best four years of high school a girl could ask for. The saying goes: you either loved or hated your high school years…I would go back in a heartbeat. Great Oak sits at the base of Wolf Valley across from Pechanga. In 2009 and 2010, GOHS was named in Newsweek’s annual top 1000 high schools in America. It was ranked #700 nationally in 2010 and as of 2016, ranked 84th in the State of California. It was awarded as a California Distinguished School in 2009, along with being a California Gold Ribbon School. Great Oak happens to be the only public high school in Temecula to offer AP and IB classes. The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme began in 2006 and attracts many students to transfer in. The IB program is utilized in 140 countries around the world and equips students with an internationally accepted qualification for entry into higher education, recognized by countless universities. GOHS takes its “safe school” promise very seriously, offering mental health support and channels to report abuse. The Wolfpack goes hard on its spirit days (especially during homecoming week) so be sure to come prepared or be cast out. Although the biggest school with 3,161 students, GOHS makes it so easy to find your group of friends through extracurricular activities. A large percentage of students are athletes, a part of the renowned Wolfpack. Each program is determined to create the best student-athlete possible, and I think their standings within California’s CIF Southern Section show that they are doing just that. Beyond sports, there are more than 120 clubs and student organizations to choose from. You cannot go wrong with anything on this campus!
